Doris R. Watkins, age 88, passed away in Dayton, Ohio on November 20, 2013, after a blessedly brief period of declining health. She had lived there for more than a decade with her daughter, Bronna Watkins Vance, and her son-in-law Jim Vance. Her survivors also include Bronna's half sister, Patricia Watkins "Trish" Oba of Holladay, Utah.
Born Doris Jean Rollins to Eugene and Azalee V. Rollins in Carbon Hill, Alabama on April 16, 1925, Mrs. Watkins had been a resident of High Point and vicinity for the majority of her life before moving to Dayton. She was married to and subsequently divorced from the late Charles E. Watkins.
As a single mother, she typically held two or more jobs at once for most of her adult life. After retiring from the main office of the Myrtle Desk Company, Mrs. Watkins greatly enjoyed working part-time at the Lakewood Par 3 Golf Course prior to her move to Dayton. Her main avocation was following national and world events, especially political news, by watching CNN avidly, reading the daily newspapers, and devouring political non-fiction and fiction alike.
Mrs. Watkins was a Christian.
She went the distance with grace, empathy, and a smile from a loving heart; she plowed her own row and lived her life with the strength of an oak tree.
