Donald "Pappy" Vanzant, age 82, of Huber Heights, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Pappy was born in Sugartree Ridge, Ohio on April 24, 1942 to the late Joseph & Dorothy Vanzant.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lola Dixon and brother-in-law, Michael Cooper.
Pappy is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Pamela "Pammie" Vanzant; children, Angel Mischele Horn, Valerie (Bob) Dempsey, Russell Stanaford, Stephen Vanzant, Maria Vanzant Outlaw, Amy (David Voge) Hensley, Davi Lynn (Matthew) Lopez and Autum (Tristen) Barnett; 28 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; siblings, Larry (Jackie) Vanzant, Marilyn Cooper, Carolyn (Ed) Brown and David Lynn Vanzant; sisters-in-law, Debra (Dave) Burke and Nancy Eloise Howard; numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
Pappy was raised on a farm in Hillsboro, Ohio. He graduated from New Vienna H.S. in 1961, then went on to serve in the U.S. Army from 1962-1965. Pappy served as a Dayton Police Officer for 27 years. After retiring, he drove a Beavercreek City School Bus until 2017. Pappy enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and riding his motorcycle. He attended Living Word Church in Vandalia, where he served as security. Pappy loved nothing more than serving the Lord and being with his family.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 from 5-8pm at the Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton, OH 45424. The service will be on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 12pm at the funeral home. Pappy will be laid to rest at Dayton National Cemetery at 2pm.
