Donald J. Hohne, Sr. "The Chief", 94, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2023. Loving father of Karen (Steve) Deneke, Paul (Karen) Hohne, AnnaMarie Hohne, Melissa Schooley, James Hohne and DJ Hohne, cherished grandfather of Lisa (Daren) Boaz, Lori Bane, Jessica (John) Rose, Jennifer Young, Molly Guidry, Kelley (Scott) Best, Amy Mote, Christopher (Valerie) Mote, Ryan (Brittany) Schooley, Lindsay (Jacob) Carney and Eric (Brittany) Schooley, beloved special friend of Helen Gorby and family friend Terris Fink. Don is also survived by 26 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years Ruth Hohne, his children David Hohne and Garry Hohne as well as his two sisters and one brother.
Don was known as a steward of service, compassion, and kindness. At the eager age of 17, he enlisted into the U.S. Army, honorably serving as Military Police in Japan. Returning home in 1947, he earned his high school diploma while working as a delivery driver for TruAde. He was a faithful, involved parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church. An active member of the American Legion and VFW, Don continued living out his passion for service and patriotism.
Those who had the true pleasure of knowing Don called him "The Chief" or "The Don." He was spirited, witty, and always enjoyed spending time with those he loved. Whether it was playing cards, pool, or simply sharing in conversation, he very much valued his time spent with friends and family. Later in life, his children and grandchildren listened intently to the memories and stories he would share, never lacking in wisdom or a good laugh. His presence was always warm, and his optimism was infectious. Living hundreds of miles from some of his children and grandchildren for the latter half of his life might have been his only complaint.
Public visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home (3380 Dayton Xenia Rd) on Saturday April 29, 2023 from 4 pm until 6 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Don at a later date. Please consider a donation in Don's memory to the Dayton VA Lakeside Manor (https://www.va.gov/dayton-health-care/work-with-us/volunteer-or-donate/).
