Donald Joseph Gilmore, age 84 of Vandalia, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at Wood Glen Alzheimer's Community. He was born September 10, 1937 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to the late Russell and Leona Gilmore.
Don, known as "Donnie" to friends and family in New York, was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He served in the U.S. Air Force for nine years. During his time in the Air Force, he met and married Jane Rose at a local dance in Dayton, Ohio. They were married 58 years. Don and Jane settled in Vandalia, Ohio where they raised their family. After 35 years of service as an electronics technician, he retired from Sears.
Don was a member of the Dayton Chess Club and was the Champion for several years running. He enjoyed playing basketball, scrabble and any strategy game. He loved books and was an avid reader. Don came from a musical family and enjoyed playing the piano and saxophone. He had a quick wit and loved a good laugh. He was a good family man and was dearly loved.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Gilmore in 2017; brother, Russell E. Gilmore, Jr. in 2019; and sister, Jean (White) Conover.
Don will be missed by his loving children, Shelley (John) Buehrle, Carol Gilmore, Paul Gilmore and Jerry Gilmore; grandchildren, Matthew Buehrle, Laura Buehrle, Kelsey Buehrle, Michael Buehrle and Mark Buehrle; great grandson, Jasper Buehrle; sisters, Shirley Poilucci and Judith (James) Downing; sister-in-law, Jeanne (Ronk) Gilmore; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Family will receive friends Monday, November 29, 2021 from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd., Dayton. Burial with full military honors will be held at the Dayton National Cemetery.
