Donald Lester Burnette

April 17, 1921 — October 11, 2021

Don "DL" Burnette, age 100 of Fairborn, passed away Monday, October 11, 2021 at Landings of Huber Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care. He was born April 17, 1921 in Rhea County, Tennessee the son of Willard and Lilly Burnette.

Don was born and raised in Grandview, Tennessee where he started working with his father, who was a blacksmith, at 5 years old. He never stopped working until he entered assisted living at 99 years old. He said working was what kept him going.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army, beginning at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. While in training he met the love of his life, Carol Wegenast. They were married on October 17, 1946 in Fairborn, Ohio. He served in the 28th Calvary RCn Squad and also served in General Eisenhauer's Command Headquarters. He received medals from serving in all 5 major battles on the European front including the American Defense Ribbon and EMAE Theatre Ribbon with five bronze stars.

He loved fishing, hunting and tinkering in his garage. He also enjoyed traveling. He was a charter member of Wrightview Church of the Nazarene and was instrumental in building the church. He held various roles in the growth of the church, being awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Church General Assembly.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Carol on September 29, 2009; his parents and siblings, Lois Brady, Charles Burnette, Cleady Burnette & Marie Burnette.

Don is survived by his three sons, Ron (Cheryl) Burnette, Bill (Teresa) Burnette, Roy (Donna) Burnette; 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brother, Gene (Betty) Burnette; nephew, Melvin (Melody) VanDiver and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Church of the Nazarene Children's fund in Don's honor.

Visitation will be October 20, 2021 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm with a service at 12:00 pm officiated by Reverend Lowell Lay at Newcomer - Beavercreek Chapel (3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek, Ohio 45432). Don will be laid to rest, next to his wife, at Byron Cemetery with full military honors immediately following the service.
