David J. Osterfeld

May 1, 1974 — September 30, 2021

David Osterfeld, age 47 of Huber Heights, OH, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2021 after a valiant month-long battle with COVID-19.

Left to cherish David's memory are his wife Brittany (Watts) Osterfeld; children: Bridgette (Rayna) Rangel, David, Alyssa, and Wyatt Osterfeld; father, Paul Osterfeld; brothers: Brian (Emilie) and Matthew (Jamie) Osterfeld; sister, Rebecca Osterfeld; and grandmother, Eileen Osterfeld. Beloved family members also include: mother- and stepfather-in-law Stephanie and Norman Pennington; father- and stepmother-in-law Samuel and Kari Watts; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Landon Watts, Chelsea Watts, Claire and Styles Hardamon, Colleen Pennington, Melissa Pennington-Daughtery, Greg and Jen Maurer, Matthew Maurer, and Elizabeth (Maurer) and Rick Staarmann.

David also dearly loved his nieces and nephews: AnaPaula and Esteban Llanas Jr., Catherine and Madeline Osterfeld, and Colton and Maci Osterfeld. He leaves behind many aunts and uncles, so many cousins, and life-long friends Chris Bereda and Patrick Londergan, as well as close friend Karen Harker.

David was preceded in death by his mother, Barb (Aufermann) Osterfeld, his infant daughter, Ariana Osterfeld, his first wife, Dannale "Nicky" Osterfeld, grandparents Bill and Carola Aufermann, grandfather Sylvester Osterfeld, and cousin Justin Osterfeld.

Dave loved his children and had a unique relationship with each. With Wyatt, they made up songs they would sing together as part of their special connection, showing Dave's tender, goofy side. He enjoyed sharing movies and songs with Alyssa to show her what he loved in his childhood. His son David could always count on his dad to show compassion to him when he didn't feel well; Big David would lay with Little David in the family room to give him comfort. Dave taught Bridgette to have such a level of imagination and shared so many joyful memories with her. His daughter-in-law Rayna knew that she could depend on Dave to be a great listener and to be someone who would help at a moment's notice.

David had a childhood filled with siblings, cousins, Boy Scouts, and more. He was notorious for coming up with plans that often got those around him in trouble, although his fast-talking sometimes got them out of it. Seating arrangements in the minivan were difficult growing up since he wasn't allowed to sit next to certain siblings in order to avoid "dumbness." However, his brothers and sister usually gave as good as they got, and he never did get over one punishment where he was cheated out of half of a banana.

Dave was known for so many things to all who knew him. Dave proudly served in the United States Army before returning home and starting a family. He loved all kinds of music, and sang when he thought no one was listening. He played all kinds of games and enjoyed spending time with friends and family at cookouts. He liked to sit in the rain because he loved the smell of it coming down. He was a big Stephen King fan, reading all of his books and watching every scary movie. Dave loved to make people laugh and crack jokes, even if the joke or the timing was inappropriate. He was so good at making up stories for effect that it was sometimes difficult to tell when he was being serious. His children believed any number of ridiculous stories or explanations he made up for them, no matter how far-fetched.

A complete list of Dave's friends would be impossible, because he befriended every single person he met. He was never judgemental, and he would do absolutely anything to help anyone in need. He was more concerned with how everyone else was doing, even when he was going through his own trying times, and it was rare to see him without a smile on his face and a kind word on his lips.

Dave was a very intelligent man, and he literally believed he knew it all, even when he didn't. He was independent and stubborn, but that stubbornness is why he fought so hard for last month to beat this disease. His fight and his giant heart were two of the greatest things about him, and everyone who knew him is better for having done so. We will never forget all of the wonderful things that made Dave who he was, and we know the stories and memories will continue to bring love and life to our hearts.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home - Beavercreek Chapel (3380 Dayton-Xenia Road, Beavercreek). A funeral Mass for David will be held at St. Helen's Parish (5100 Burkhardt Rd., Dayton) Friday, October 8, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.
