Born December 24, 1942 in Lorain, Ohio, Jon Lawrence Mitchell was a resident of Enon since 1990.
Chief Master Sergeant Mitchell served in the United States Air Force for 29 years in 11 states and 15 countries. He received the Bronze Star for heroism in Vietnam, and numerous meritorious service medals, commendations and Air Force Excellence Awards. In 1985, he was named the European Division Air Force Communication Command 1st Sergeant of the Year. While he worked in communications and recruiting in the early part of his career, he considered his role as a 1st Sergeant his true calling. He was always there for the troops.
The Chief continued his life of service after retirement by obtaining a masters degree in Urban Affairs and worked with non-profit agencies in the local community. He volunteered at Wright Patterson AFB retirement office where he was still looking out for the troops.
Chief Mitchell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janette (Lesniak) Mitchell; children Barbara (Gerrit) Lawrence, Jonathon (Margaret) Mitchell, Cecelia (Zachary) Harrison and Amy Gray; 9 grandchildren; and brothers Mark Mitchell and Daniel (Margaret) Mitchell. Chief Mitchell was proceeded in death by his son Joseph Michael Mitchell and parents John Lawrence Mitchell and Teresa Martina (Eiden) Mitchell.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or your local food bank.
Public visitation will be held at Mary, Help of Christians (954 N Maple Ave, Fairborn, OH 45324) at 10:00 am with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 am. Jon will be laid to rest with military honors at Fairfield Cemetery.
