Clarke Emerson Whitaker
Age 86, of Lebanon, Ohio, passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 16, 2008, after a lengthy illness.
Clarke was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Virginia, in 1984.
He is survived by his wife of the past 23 years, Bertha (King) Whitaker; four children, Roger (Sue) Whitaker of Westerville, Ohio, Linda (Ken) Young of Carmel, Indiana, Shirley (Steve) Edwards of St. Simon's Island, Georgia and Melanie (Gary) Johnson of Lebanon, Ohio; ten grandchildren, David (Suzette) Raber, Wendy (Andy) Wing, Kate (Brad) LaLonde, Sarah (Stuart) Brown, Laura (Steven) Ruprecht, Lindsey Lebkisher, Tyler, Kristyn, Allison and Aric Johnson; and by five great grandchildren.
Clarke attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. During WW II he served in the U. S. Army and went on to serve as President of Color Box, Inc in Richmond, Indiana. Clarke was involved in numerous organizations, some of which include: a current member of Grace United Methodist Church where he had served on the Board of Trustees, a member of the Xi Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, past member of the Board of Directors of Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Indiana, past member of the Board of Directors of United Theological Seminary, 32nd degree Scottish Rite mason and a member of Far Hills Masonic Lodge # 784 F&AM.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 19, at Grace United Methodist Church, 1001 Harvard Blvd (@ Salem Ave), Dayton, Ohio 45406. Rev. Dr. Sherry Gale will officiate. The family will receive friends following memorial services in the church parlor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made in memory of Clarke to the Grace UMC Memorial Fund.
The family would like to thank the staff of Quaker Heights Nursing Center and Community Care Hospice for the care they provided.
