Chester W. "Chet" Fields, a resident of Fairfield, Ohio, age 76, passed away at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, Ohio on the morning of September 26, 2023.
Chester was born on April 3, 1947, the son of Stephen Sr. and Charlotte (Spaulding) Fields at Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton, Ohio. He attended Ross Local Schools and in 1965 he enlisted in the United States Army where he scored exceptionally high on his testing and was placed with the Army Security Agency, better known today as the National Security Agency (NSA). Chester was a proud Vietnam Veteran and served his country as a Morse Intercept Operator in Pleiku and Phu Bai Vietnam from 1968-1969. On May 16, 1971, Chester married Ina M. Simensen in Hamilton, Ohio. In 1975 Chester and Ina purchased their beloved historical farmhouse in Fairfield, Ohio and began their family. Chester and Ina were married for 46 years until Ina's passing in 2017. Chester was an employee at Southwestern Ohio Steel as a truck driver and crane operator, retiring after 30 years of employment with the company. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Chester Loved antique tractors and was a history buff. He was a fan of many genres of music, his favorite being gospel especially when sung by the Oakridge Boys or the Blind Boys of Alabama. Chester was a diehard Bengals and NHRA Drag Racing fan and never missed a game or race. He adored animals and held a special place in his heart for his beloved puppers, Buster. Chester was a member of the Fairfield Church of Christ where he made amazing friends and the congregation became his second family.
Chester is survived by his mother, Charlotte Fields; his two daughters: Heather R. Fields and Holly A. Vance; grandchildren: Harley R. (Erik) Tomchek, Timothy A. Humphrey III, Riley S. Humphrey, Braden C. Humphrey; great grandchildren: Jarred, Elliot, Jayden, Asher, and Launna; brothers: Ronald (Violet) Fields, Stephen (Rebecca) Fields, Jr. and Mark (Wanda) Fields; Special mention to Chester's dear friends: Adam Heiser, Cindy Sullivan, and Paul Fontaine. Chester adored you and the family will be forever grateful for the love, friendship, and support you gave him.
Chester was preceded in death by his wife Ina M. Fields; father, Stephen Fields, Sr; brother, Dexter Fields, and his son in law James M. Vance. A private memorial service will be held at a later date and time to be determined by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chester's name to Fairfield Church of Christ in Fairfield, Ohio, your local branch of the Humane Society, or any veteran outreach program of your choosing.
