Cheryl Ann (Shay) Pottebaum, 78, of Centerville, OH passed away on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Hospice House in Dayton, OH surrounded by members of her family.
She was born in Effingham, IL in 1934, the daughter of Lester R. and Ferrill A. (Niccum) Shay. She was preceded in death by her parents and her only sister, Mrs. Jack (Margo) Thies of Effingham, IL. Cheryl was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her four children, Julie Bolin (Carl) of Bethel Township, OH; Cecilia Turner (Randall) of Liberty Township, OH; David Pottebaum (Tanyaluck) of Bangkok, Thailand; and John Pottebaum of Sacramento, CA. Cheryl had eight grandchildren, Erica Kepler of Jersey City, NJ; Brittany Kepler of Bonita Springs, FL; Bryan Kepler of Bethel Township, OH; Elise Howe (Michael) of Astoria, NY; Allison Turner of Irvine, CA; Matthew Turner (deceased); Matthew Pottebaum of Bangkok, Thailand; and Johanna Margo Pottebaum of Bangkok, Thailand. Cheryl is also survived by her former husband of 39 years, Gerard Pottebaum of Loveland, OH and many nieces and nephews.
Valedictorian of her high school class at Effingham High School, Cheryl was crowned homecoming queen in 1952. A graduate of Methodist Hospital School of Nursing (Indianapolis) in 1955, Cheryl lived several years in China Lake, California and South Bend, IN before moving to Ohio in 1962. While family and home-making were her priority, she worked as a registered nurse in several doctors' offices in Kettering, OH for 26 years. A patron of the arts and devoted community volunteer, Cheryl was a Girl Scout leader as well as a Hospice of Dayton volunteer. A dog lover, Cheryl also enjoyed knitting, gardening, reading, music, and spending time with her family especially at the beach. Family and friends will long remember her for her carefully served meals, especially holiday gatherings, and variety of homemade cookies she generously shared with her Kettering neighbors.
A memorial prayer service will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 4500 Ackerman Blvd., Kettering, Ohio, on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Dayton where Cheryl found peace in her last days. (Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45420).
