Charles R. Clifton

CLIFTON, Charles R., age 92, born October 26, 1918 in Toledo, OH to the late Rowland & Marie (Beckman) Clifton. He is also preceded in death by his siblings, Bob (Iris) Clifton and Ken (Arlean) Clifton and Marie (Tom) Hufford.

Charles attended school at Coy Grade School, Oregon, OH and graduated from Clay High School in 1936, Oregon, OH. Charles had various jobs after graduating from high school while living in Toledo. He was a pit crew member at Toledo Speedway and also worked at the Sun Oil Refinery. He was licensed as a flight instructor and flew commercial aircraft for Metcalf Flying Service in Toledo, OH from 1940-1948. He served as a 2nd lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol during WWII at the Toledo Municipal Airport where he ferried fighter aircraft to the west coast for the Defense Department.

His passion for all things electronic began as a TV technician for Brown Radio and Red's Radio. He relocated to Dayton OH in 1959 to accept a position at DARE. His federal civil service career began in 1960 at the Air Force Depot and he later transferred to DESC as an electronics technician. He retired from federal civilian service, after 27 years, in Jan 1987. He was also a part time sales associate at Rikes for many years. Charles was licensed as an amateur radio operator in February 1939. He was a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League and QCWA. Charles was also an active member of Ascension Parish since 1960 and was a charter member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society since 1985.

Charles leaves to cherish his memory wife, Margaret (Zimmer) Clifton, married March 31, 1951 in Toledo, OH; children, Jeff (Barb) Clifton, Sharon (Jimmy) Donnelly, and Diane (David) Chong; grandchildren, Nicole and Michelle Chong; step-grandchildren, Brian (Beth) and Jeff Reed; step great-grandchildren, Andrea , Rachel, and Renee Reed, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, too many to list.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Ascension Catholic Church, 2025 Woodman Dr., Kettering, OH. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton, OH. Family will receive friends from 5:00 -7:00 pm on Friday, July 1, 2011 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek, OH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Dayton or Ascension Church St. Vincent de Paul Society.
