Charles O. Johnson, age 89 of Dayton, passed away Friday, August 22, 2014. He was born September 10, 1924 in Dayton to the late Edward Taylor and Geneva Johnson. Charles was preceded in death by his second wife, Geraldine Bentley, aunt Mamie Cooper and cousin, Virginia Carter.
He is survived by his daughter, Melody Jackson; granddaughter, Tonyette Jackson; great-granddaughter, Tanasia Rayner; first wife, Lulu Warnock-Jackson; step-son, Mark Jackson and a host of family and friends.
Charlie graduated from Dunbar High School in 1943 where he was first All City track athlete at the school. He later attended Wilberforce on an athletic scholarship prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Charlie later became employed for over 20 years with Peak Security as a security guard. He attended Bethel Baptist Church and even handled their security. Charlie enjoyed basketball and football, especially the Dayton Bombers.
He resided at Mary Scott Nursing Home during his final years. He was known as "Security" by the staff and fellow residents. Charlie will be dearly missed.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at Mary Scott Nursing Home and Vitas Hospice for their overwhelming love and compassion they shared toward Charlie.
Family will receive friends from 5-8 PM with memories being shared at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd. Charlie will be interred at Dayton National Cemetery, 4400 W. Third St., Dayton at 12 noon on Wednesday, August 27, where a funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30 AM or guest may go directly to the cemetery.
