Charles M. Smith Jr.

Charles M. Smith Jr., passed away November 22, 2015 at Miami Valley Hospital. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on May 1, 1934.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Jo Studebaker Smith; 2 daughters, Vivian Williams, Crawfordville, Florida, and Mary Avrett (Jim), Dover New Hampshire; a sister, Janet Morris (Myrl), Wilmington; a brother, John Smith, Wilmington; 2 step-sons, Richard Posey, Beavercreek and Douglas Posey, Centerville; 3 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 1 niece and 3 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles M. Smith Sr., and Marian (Perhot) Smith, and a sister, Marian Hurley.

Charles lived in Xenia from 1940-1977 and in Beavercreek for the past 37 years. He quit high school to join the Ohio National Guard of Xenia, and joined the Army in January 1952. He proudly served with the 7th Infantry Division/31st Infantry Regiment, and was injured in Korea in October 1952, where he was awarded a Purple Heart. He returned to Xenia High School to graduate. He worked 33 years as a civilian at WPAFB, serving as an aircraft mechanic and museum restoration specialist. Since retiring in 1988, he partnered with his brother at Buckminn's Harley Davidson in Xenia for over 20 years. He was active with the Dayton Chapter 31 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart for many years, serving as Department Commander in 2001-02, Department of Ohio Honor Guard Commander, and most recently as Senior Vice Commander of Chapter 31. He also was a member of VFW, DAV, 7th Infantry Division Association, and the 31st Infantry Regiment Association. He was active at the Beavercreek Senior Center for over 15 years. He and his wife have bowled in mixed leagues at the Beaver Vu Lanes for over 35 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to MOPH Chapter 31, 805 E. Linden Ave. Miamisburg, OH 45342.


Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until the funeral at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Newcomer Funeral Home Beavercreek, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd. Beavercreek, OH 45432. Burial will follow at Valley View Memorial Gardens.
