Charles Hoover, Jr. passed away on Tuesday, June 29th at the Laurels of West Carrollton, OH surrounded by his wife of 58 years, Barbara (Craig) and children, Rob & Amy (Terry) Hoover, and Amy (Hoover) Wren.
Charles is also survived by his son-in-law, Lt. Col. Doug Wren, grandchildren, 1st Lt. Alex (Hannah) Wren, Brian Hoover, Casey Hoover, Mackenzie Hinton, Kaitlyn Wren, Noah Wren, Elliot Barlow and Grey Barlow, siblings, Yolonda Murphy, Inas (Carl) Clark, William (Carolyn) Hoover and Del (Pat) Hoover, brothers-in-law, David Taylor, Larry (Linda) Craig and Rick (Charlene) Craig, many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
He was known to many people by various names: Charles, Charlie, Chuck, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Charles, Uncle Grandpa, Hoove, Coach and Mr. Hoover.
Charles grew up a small-town kid in Camden, Ohio graduating in 1960 from Shawnee High School. He was a guard and the shortest member of the Shawnee Arrows basketball team that won regionals in 1959. After obtaining his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Miami University, Charles eloped with one of his high school sweethearts and moved to Northbrook, IL to teach earth science, then later chemistry. He coached football, baseball, and basketball at Glenbrook North High School.
Real estate investment and restoration pulled him out of teaching, founding The Investment Place in 1979 in the Chicago area. Property management and investment didn't take up too much time to prevent him from proudly being a Chicago Cubs season ticket holder.
In 2000, Charles and Barb made Denver their new home where Charles continued his real estate work. Once in Denver, Charles became an avid hiker, cyclist, and backpacker. He learned to ski at the age of 59 and became a proud season pass holder for Seniors at Loveland Ski Area outside of Denver until 2016.
Charles was a Master storyteller often including a few embellishments. He loved fishing and the fish tales that went along with those trips. Charles is the undisputed family record holder for the largest walleye caught in North America.
His business and interests allowed for lots of travel. Charles enjoyed good food and good friends and even better when they were together. He had a sweet tooth to the end (even if they weren't his) and his favorite dessert was Barb's homemade cherry pie.
Charles' frequent address changes led to rumors among the family that he might be a covert CIA agent - or on the run from them. To add to the intrigue, he was inexplicably the holder of a Gold Coin from the famous Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse in Dallas.
Loved ones that cleared the way: Parents Charles & Geneva Hoover, Jim & Norma (sister) Deem, Judy Taylor (Sister-in-law), Ray Murphy (brother-in-law), and the only dog he ever liked, Bentley.
Never one for fuss or funerals, the family will honor his wishes and hold a private party. Charles would appreciate you raising a glass in his memory.
