Charles Allen Hammond, Sr., age 80 of Dayton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday August 15, 2011. He was born on November 3, 1930 in Springfield, OH, to the late Charles and Vinnie Hammond. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Turner.
Charles is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ella Mae Hammond (Goodman); 5 children, Doris L. Ricks, Charles A. Hammond, Jr., Vinnie Butler, Richard Hammond and Timothy Hammond; 13 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; brother, Dr. Eugene Hammond; sister, Patricia (Richard) Jeter; sister-in-law, Evelyn Foust; special aunt, Lillian Fambro; and a host of special nieces, nephews, other family members and good friends.
Charles served his country honorably in the United States Navy, as well as the United States Air Force, retiring after 26 years. He worked as a Chaplain Administrator for the U.S. Air Force, which took him to many different ports of call. Charles also served in the civil service for 11 years as a housing inspector for Wright Patterson AFB. He founded the first east side boxing club in Wichita Falls, TX, as well coaching football and boxing in Dayton. Charles has been a member of the United House of God for 23 years, through which he has served as an ordained bishop for the past 10 years.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday August 21, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home & Crematory, 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton, OH, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Burial will take place on Monday August 22, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Dayton National Cemetery, 4100 West 3rd Street, Dayton, OH. Bishop Harry Callaway to officiate.
