Cecil G. "Smitty" Smith, Sr., age 84 of Dayton, passed away November 2, 2010. He was born July 30, 1926 in Middletown, Ohio to the late Clarence and Lucille Smith.
Smitty is survived by his children: Michael G. Smith, Regina Cecil, Cecil G. "Gordy" Smith, Jr. (Jeanie) and Tommy G. Smith (Janell); 6 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
Smitty was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he was a Seaman aboard the USS Teton, WWII. He retired as an Ironworker after 40 years of service from Local 290. He played 3 years for Dayton's Triangles Semi-Pro Football Team from 1948-1951. As an amateur golfer, Smitty scored a hole-in-one May 30, 1991 at Riverbend Golf Course.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Newcomer Funeral Home & Crematory, 4104 Needmore Road, Dayton, where the family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service, 11 am – 1:00 pm. Burial will be held at 3:00 pm at Dayton National Cemetery. A celebration of Smitty's life will continue at Connells.
