Carol Levon Alexander (Segar), age 64, daughter of the late Carl and Harriet Alexander, passed away in the early hours of July 12th. A devout Roman Catholic, Carol once dreamed about becoming a nun as a child in Catholic school. In a fortunate twist of fate, she became the doting mother of five children instead: Andre(Shana), Sean(Brandi), Kia, Danielle "Dani", and Blake. As well as her nine grandchildren whom she loved spending time with: Brittney, Haileigh, Makenzie, Gabrielle, Phoenix, Brazil, Brook, Breana, Imani, Brooklyn, and Lux. Her great grandchildren Aria and Amir and one great on the way. Her siblings Deborah(Eugene), Carla, Lisa, Carl(Carole), Matthew, Steven (Renee), and Joel. She was preceded in death by two of her siblings, Denise & Mark.
Carol grew up with nine other siblings in Indianapolis, IN. Living in the country, Carol would often speak of caring for her younger siblings on modest resources while both her parents worked. Caring for others would be a theme of her life. You would often find her lending her hand to loved ones and even strangers. It would not be uncommon to see Carol stop and pick up a woman and child walking carrying groceries and give them a ride home. She would also bring folks down on their luck into her home for a warm meal. Carol was an amazing cook. Her specialties were crawfish étouffée and lasagna. Her lasagna was so good that she would often joke that she was "Black Italian" after receiving a well-deserved compliment for her cuisine. Her Creole cooking garnered her a long awaited spot at the 2nd Street Market, a dream left unfulfilled due to losing her fight with pancreatic cancer.
Carol moved to Dayton, OH as a teenager and spent much of her adult life working at Ameritech and later on Macys Corporate Center. In between jobs, her entrepreneurial spirit would start such business ventures as Beck 'n' Call, a personal concierge service, 3 Sisters Catering, and was known in the Oregon District as the "Cheesesteak Taco Lady" with her popular late night food cart. She loved to travel and even when not traveling, she was always on the move. She would say, "a day is wasted if you don't leave the house." She was always one for an adventure and made for an excellent road trip companion. When not on the move, Carol could be found absorbed into a book or a classic film but primarily gossiping on the phone with one of her sisters.
At Carol's request there will not be a funeral service but instead a Celebration of Life at Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd. Dayton, Ohio 45424 on Monday July 19th with the visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the memorial to begin at 10 a.m.
