Carlos J. Mathis, age 94 of Miami Township, OH passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at Hospice of Dayton. He was born January 2, 1927 in Pikeville, Tennessee to George Dewey and Elsie (Brown) Mathis. Carlos Married Irene Gibbons on December 5, 1948 in Georgia. They were married almost 71 years at the time of her death.
Carlos is survived by two daughters, Pam (Bruce) Kennard of Dayton and Tamie (Ernie) Clark of Phoenix, AZ; a son, Tim (Tina) Mathis of Dayton; six grandchildren, Alison (Josh) Duncan, Matthew (Brittney) Kennard, Kimberly (Jon) Kresge, Travis Kennard, Jill (Kory) Caldwell, and Carlos Mathis; eight great-grandchildren, Heidi Kennard, Kruiz Kennard, Landon Kresge, Keilei Kennard, Savannah Kennard, Blake Kresge, Eli Kresge and Quinn Duncan; a sister, Marie (Robert) Singleton; brother-in-law, Bruce Gibbons; sister-in-law, Betty (John) Dunn; good friend, Bob Morgan; and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Dewey and Elsie; wife, Irene; four sisters, Evelyn, Lucinda, Ruth, and Francis; and three brothers, Charles "Ross", Stanley, and Norman Mathis.
Carlos was a proud member of the US Army where he was a medic during the Korean War. He retired from General Motors, Inland Division with 38 years. He was also a bus driver for Kettering City Schools. When Cabbage Patch Kids were very hot, he sold quite a few!! He enjoyed cutting grass, so he turned it into a business. He was a very hard worker all his life.
Carlos enjoyed playing his guitar, fiddle and banjo. He loved bluegrass music. Especially Dolly Parton and Marty Stuart! In 1967, he was the bass guitar player on a record with Gene Hall, "Monkey on the Moon". He enjoyed the outdoors. Along with riding his Harley Davidson's and driving luxury cars. He also enjoyed watching old western shows, the Grand Ole Opry, music, religious, INSP, RFD-TV, and the local news and weather. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of Moraine City First Church of God, and enjoyed attending with his wife, Irene, and grandson, Carlos. Carlos enjoyed being with family. He called his family regularly and loved all of his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Newcomer Cremations, Funeral, and Receptions Centerville, 820 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd., Dayton, OH 45459. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services at Miami Valley Memory Gardens.
