Calvin H. Cates, Jr.

Calvin H. Cates, age 80, of Lebanon, Ohio passed away on June 7, 2019, at Otterbein Small House in Lebanon. Calvin was born on January 23, 1939, in Dayton, Ohio. He was the son of Calvin and Helen (Rench) Cates.
For over two decades, Calvin worked as a press operator for McCalls. He was a member of Full Gospel Church of God in Lebanon, OH. His church was an important part of his life as he became "a servant of the Lord." Calvin would spend countless hours reading his bible that was his compass through his life journey. Calvin was a "health fanatic" and would make his own bread, butter and yogurt. He also was a beekeeper enthusiast and made his own honey. In his spare time, Calvin was known by his family and friends as an avid "dumpster diver." In what little spare time he had, Calvin would enjoy fishing and spending time with his family and many friends because he never met a stranger.
Calvin is survived by his loving children, daughter, Carolyn Renee (Richard) Scott of Lebanon, OH; sons, Ronald Kevin (D'Lana) Cates of Wilmington, OH and David M. Cates of Centerville, OH; sister, Margaret (Curt) Warner; brothers, Teddy (Linda) Cates and Raymond (Susan Ferguson) Cates; grandchildren, Josh Hall, Isaiah (Toria)Hall, Chelsea Cates, Dalton Cates, Rich (Sharon)Scott, Jodi Case, Kelly (Shawn) Riddell, Dylan (Lacee Allen) Scott and Emily Scott(Brian Bailey); great-grandchildren, Cody and Connor Case, and Jake Riddell; great-grandchildren, Hayden Martin, Lane Martin, Raylan Hall, Gabby Hall, Tucker Hall and Maylee Bailey.
Along with his parents, Calvin was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Cates. and son, Mark Shawn Cates.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2019, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 820 Miamisburg-Centerville Road,Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at 12:00 noon at the Rivers Way Church, 810 North Broadway, Lebanon, Ohio, with Calvin's son David Cates, officiating. Calvin will be cremated at a later date.
