Bill Miller

July 6, 1937 — April 21, 2020

William "Bill" Wesley Miller, age 82 of Xenia, OH passed away after an extended illness on April 21, 2020, at Bellbrook Health and Rehab Center. Bill was born on July 6, 1937 in Columbus, OH. The son of William and Thelma (Stacey) Miller, Bill married Sharon Rae Farren on September 24, 1960 at the Greenmont Oak Park Community Church in Kettering, OH.

Bill proudly joined the United States Navy in 1955 and served as a Petty Officer before being honorably discharged in 1963. Bill was assigned to the Navy ammunition ship, the USS Shasta that happened to be in Cuba when Fidel Castro was coming into power. As a result, he was one of the sailors charged with the responsibility of guarding the nuclear weapons aboard the ship.

Bill was an esteemed member of the Navy "Blue Nose Society" established to recognize the sailors on the ship that circumnavigated the North Pole. Bill was extremely proud of his service to his country and would rarely leave home without his Navy cap proudly perched on his head.

Bill worked over 40 years at the VA Medical Center in Dayton as the supervisor of warehousing operations before retiring in 1995. After retirement, Bill enjoyed watching baseball, football and basketball on television, and especially enjoyed sitting on his porch with buddies Frank and Tony listening to Marty and Joe on Reds radio. Bill was a very good athlete in his own right and imparted knowledge to his sons and grandchildren. As their biggest fan and coach, he rarely missed their sporting events. Bill was fondly thought of as a "second father" to his daughter-in-laws Pam and Kathee. And he was a devoted friend to those he cared about. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke the words were worth hearing.

Bill leaves behind a living legacy in his loving son Jeffrey William Miller and his wife Kathee of Bellbrook, OH, granddaughter Cara J. Wood and her husband Skyler of Centerville, OH, grandsons Matthew W. Miller and his wife Emily of New Philadelphia, OH, and Christian Staub of Kettering, OH.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Sharon and her parents Marion and Ethel Farren, son Michael J. Miller, brother Barry Miller, and sister June Karns.

The family acknowledges the staff of Bellbrook Health and Rehab Center and Hospice of Dayton for their compassionate and loving care of Bill.

Out of respect for personal and public safety during this challenging time, the funeral service to honor and celebrate Bill's life will be postponed. Information will be forthcoming once services are scheduled.
