June 12, 1935 — December 23, 2024

Dayton, OH

Betty Jean Caldwell, a cherished matriarch, beloved friend, and nurturing influence, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on June 12, 1935, in Scott County, Kentucky, she devoted her life to her family, enveloping them in love, kindness, and laughter.

As the cornerstone of her family, Betty was not only an example of strength and perseverance but also a gentle guide who dedicated herself to the upbringing of every child in her family. Many will remember her for her unwavering commitment to nurturing those around her, especially her children, J.R. (Julienne) Caldwell, Tom Caldwell, and Ruth Hawk. She shared her love of reading with her children and grandchildren, creating a legacy of learning and curiosity that will continue to resonate through generations.

Betty's home was often the lively gathering place, particularly during Thanksgiving and Christmas, where she showcased her extraordinary cooking skills. Her ability to bring together family and friends around her table was a testament to her joyful spirit. Every holiday was marked by her passion for cooking, filling the hearts—and stomachs—of her loved ones with unforgettable meals and warm memories.

An avid reader and fantastic bowler, Betty's hobbies were a reflection of her zest for life. Her interests created bridges for connection and joy among her family. Her grandchildren, including Casey, Sam, Jeremy, Zach, Lacey, Cory, and Sarah, were recipients of her warm stories and delightful spirit. The bond she formed with her great-grandchildren, Elle, Kylie, Maddison, Parker, Cole, Sapphire, Lillian, Bettie, Eleanor, Brooklyn, and Sydnie, was a testament to her enduring legacy of love.

Betty is survived by her devoted husband, James Caldwell, who stood beside her through all the joys and challenges of life. Her siblings, Delores Robey, Polly Wise, and Darrell Wise, along with her extensive family, including numerous in-laws, share in the love and warmth that she so freely gave.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and E.T. Wise Sr.; her siblings, Patty Wise, Carl L. Wise, and E.T. Wise Jr. and her sister-in-law, Virginia Dee. They welcomed her with open arms, and it is with heavy hearts that those she leaves behind honor her memory.
