Betty Jane (Burkholder) Carr

November 15, 1922 — May 1, 2022

Betty Jane Carr, age 99, died Sunday, May 1, 2022 at Bethany Village.

Betty was born on November 15, 1922 in Dayton, OH, the daughter of Charles and Myrtle Burkholder. After graduating Stivers High School in 1940, Betty and Joseph Carr were married December 12, 1942. Betty was employed in the greater Dayton area by The Wetzel's Pharmacy, Third National Bank, The Rike Kumler Co., Cassano's Pizza King and St. Leonard's before retiring.

During their 67 years of marriage, Betty and Joe travelled to historic cities, patriotic events and the National Parks, having been able to traverse to the four corners of the country they loved.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 67 years, Joseph Amos Carr, and her best friend Norma Giltnane Westerhold.
She is survived by her 3 daughters, Gale (Michael) Hatfield, Josie (Wayne) Stamm and Nancy (Steve) Maltby; 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, a nephew, and many friends.

A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to 7, Betty was active in their school activities, sporting events, and work accomplishments of each family member. Whether it was changing a diaper or preparing a bottle, Betty was there; exclaiming at being present at the birth of 1 of the great grandchildren, it was "the only birth she had ever seen." Betty cherished being able to embrace the gift of life as she would travel hours to hold in her arms the next arrival to the family.

Tirelessly, she would ensure, when called upon, that any family member would arrive at the intended activity or destination and then be up for the challenge to a backyard game! Betty and Joe loved enjoying the live, local productions of Broadway performances brought to the Dayton area; Cats and music from Evita being among their favorites. A fan of all breeds of horses and horse racing led Betty and Joe an opportunity to witness a "Run for the Roses" at the Kentucky Derby in the 1960's. Summers for many years included a drive to Sandusky, OH to share family time with her best friend from high school.
Many birthdays and holiday picnics were enjoyed at the National Cash Register Employee Old River Family Park.

Betty's laughter, strength and tenderness will be missed by all. With each blue sky above us we will feel the joy and warmth of her smile and enduring love.

The family will receive friends from 2pm until time of service at 3 pm, on Tuesday, May 17 at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 3940 Kettering Blvd.

Betty's family would like to express deepest gratitude for the love and wonderful care given by Bethany Village. If desired, in lieu of flowers, friends may make a memorial contribution to Bethany Village Graceworks Lutheran Services in Betty's memory.
