Bertha Whitaker, 82, of Waynesville, (formerly of Lebanon) Ohio passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Hospice of Dayton Butler/Warren County in Middletown, OH after a brief illness.
Bertha was born November 28, 1934 to the late James Monroe and Rosetta (Ford) King. She was a member of Countryside Church of the Nazarene in Lebanon, Ohio and formerly a member of Grace United Methodist and Faith United Methodist both in Dayton, Ohio. She worked as a secretary for many years and was the treasurer of Color Box Inc located in Richmond, Indiana at the time of her retirement. Bertha was inducted into the Northridge Local Schools Hall of Fame in 2005 for her dedication to the local school community. Prior to her passing she was a resident in Assisted Living at Quaker Heights Care Community in Waynesville, Ohio.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husbands, Omar Spencer and Clarke Whitaker; brothers, Floyd, Lloyd, Strother and James King; sisters, Dorothy Centers and Ida Mae Jackson.
Bertha is survived by her daughters, Shirley Spencer of Athens, GA and Melanie (Gary) Johnson of Lebanon, OH; one sister, Norma Jean Slack of Bethel, OH; six grandchildren, Laura (Victor) Maya of Lawrenceville, GA, Lindsey (Brett) Powell of Gray, GA, Tyler Johnson, Kristyn Cook, and Aric Johnson of Lebanon, OH, and Allison Johnson of Kettering, OH; two great grandchildren, Skyla Collum and Riley Powell. Bertha is also survived by a host of nephews, nieces, and other caring friends and relatives.
Visitation will be held at Countryside Church of the Nazarene, 1436 Deerfield Rd. Lebanon, OH from 5 to 7 PM on Friday, January 27, 2017. A funeral service will immediately follow the viewing with Reverend Lester Jones officiating. Graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 28 at Polk Grove Cemetery in Butler Township, OH. In lieu of flower, memorial donations may be made to Lebanon Christian School Student Scholarship Fund, 1436 Deerfield Rd., Lebanon, OH 45036 or The Hospice of Dayton, in Bertha's memory.
