Antonio "Tony" Thomas Fasano, Maj. USAF (Ret) passed away peacefully in his sleep on 16 May 2018.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Edna "Penny" Ellen (Sheaffer) Fasano; his son, Michael Fasano and daughter-in-law, Jennifer of Cedar Crest, NM and two grandchildren, Michaela of Indian Head, MD and Phillip of Cedar Crest, NM, and his daughter, Rozanna "Zana" Knipp and son-in-law, Richard Knipp of Centerville, OH. He is also survived by his two younger brothers, Eugene of Yonkers, NY and Emil of Lake Worth, FL.
Tony was born in Yonkers, NY on Oct. 10, 1921. He was the oldest of 7 children. Tony was preceded in death by his sister, Rose and brothers, Ralph, Frank and John. Tony was a member of the "Greatest Generation" having served in WW II as a C-47 pilot. Tony joined the US Army Signal Corps in 1940 and was assigned in the telephone communications field until his transfer to aviation training in mid-1942. While in training he was assigned to numerous locations throughout TX and OK. After receiving his wings and completing several assignments in the US, Tony was assigned to the 44th Troop Carrier Squadron, 9th US Army Air Force, 9th Troop Carrier Wing, 316th Troop Carrier Group, Cottesmore, England flying the famous C-47 "Gooney Bird". Tony participated in the D-Day invasion of France dropping paratroops from the 101st Airborne Division and towing gliders behind the German lines. He also participated in Operation Market Garden which was the push by the Allies to cross the Rhine River. After the war, Tony flew numerous missions on the Berlin Airlift. While stationed at Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, PA, Tony met Penny and they were married in January of 1948. Tony continued to fly for the Air Force until his retirement in 1963. After retirement, he continued to work for the USAF as a civilian. He retired for the last time in 1988. Tony and Penny have remained in the Dayton area since moving there in 1973.
Tony was a great husband, great father and mentor and, most importantly, a great example for his kids. Tony will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Miami Valley in Tony's memory.
