Anna Pauer

September 14, 1932 — August 20, 2022

Anna Pauer, age 89, passed away Saturday, Aug. 20. She was preceded in death by her husband, Erhard; her mother, Ida; step-father, Franz; sister, Sophie; and brother, Franz.

She was born in Patzin, part of the German Empire, on Sept. 14, 1932. (The village is now known as Pacin, in the Czech Republic). Because of the second world war conflicts, the family was driven from their home in 1946 with nothing more than they could carry. She was 14 years old. Relocated at first to Oberarnsdorf, Germany, she eventually was able to follow her mother to Bavaria, in southern Germany, and settled in the town of Sauerlach. She was employed as a housekeeper for a family who owned a farm, where she met the love of her life, Erhard Pauer.

They emigrated to the United States in 1951, arriving through Ellis Island. They arrived in the U.S. not knowing any English, which they learned in evening programs held at Patterson school in downtown Dayton. Her husband had been hired as a grower for Frisch the Florist, which was located in East Dayton. Dad ran the greenhouses for some 35 years, growing the business, supplying flowers and plants to clients around town and through the Midwest. After the death of the owner, Dad and Mom bought the business, and she not only helped to work in the greenhouses but also did the books for the business.

They were both life members of the Dayton Liederkranz-Turner, the German-American club. They were active in the organization, with Erhard joining the men's choir in 1963 and Anna volunteering in several capacities. She referred to the club as "our second home," a place where they made many life-long friendships.

She loved family above all, and spent much of her life as a homemaker. Mom loved to sew and crochet, and made many items for the family to wear. She cooked wonderful German cuisine, including Christmas cookies that the family will especially miss.

After her husband retired from the business, they became active travelers, taking in the sights from Germany to the Amazon to Tahiti to the Panama Canal to several Caribbean locales and beyond.

She is survived by her sons, Frank (Janet) Pauer, Richard (Marcia Moore) Pauer, three grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews in Germany.

On Sunday, Sept. 4, Erhard would have been 101 years old; he's been gone for 31 years.

It was her time, at last.

A gravesite service with the immediate family was held on Thursday, Sept. 1, at Woodland Cemetery.
