Funderburg, Alvin K., age 97, of Kettering, passed away October 10, 2013 at the Laurels of West Carrollton.
He is survived by his wife: Ruth Marie; daughter: Lois (John) McCracken of Marion, IN; son: Franklyn Funderburg of St. Petersburg, FL; three step children: Barbara (Phil) Cremeans of Springfield, Terry (Leigh) Fisher of Springfield & Steven (Jean) Fisher of New Boston, TX; sisters: Ruth Botkin & Edna Metzger are deceased; daughter: Evelyn Delgado is deceased. Also deceased is brother: Glen Funderburg. He has thirteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Also three step granddaughters, one grandson, Nick Delgado is serving in the military. Alvin was born on a farm in Clark County, Ohio, the son of Cyrus & Emma (Studebaker) Funderburg.
Alvin received Master Degrees in Science and Mathematics at the University of Colorado and Bowdoin College in Maine. He spent ten years in the United States Air Force as a Navigator and Bombardier during WWII with 26 combat missions over North Korea in 1950, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He taught 26 years in the FAirborn and Kettering school systems, with 18 years as Chairman of the Mathematics department of Fairmont High School. During retirement, Alvin wrote books on family history, one novel and a series of five books on religious topics.
As a member of Gideon's International, his specialty was visiting was visiting and testifying at the Montgomery County jail. Alvin and Ruth are members of longstanding at the Grace Bible Church in Springfield, where the Work of God, rightly divided, is presented by Pastor Marvin Wiseman.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Newcomer Funeral Home - South Chapel, 3940 Kettering Blvd., Kettering. Interment will follow the service at New Carlisle Cemetery in New Carlisle, Ohio. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday morning from 10:00 A.M. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Gideon's International, P.O. box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214 in memory of Alvin.
