Allen John Mathews took his karaoke act to The Big Lounge in the Sky, on January 31, 2018. Born in 1950, Big Al was the quintessential middle child to his sister Andrea (Andi) Ginnan and brother Howard. Quite the looker in his teenage years, he caught the eye of Shirley Rains, who would become his loving wife and remain his devoted best friend. "He was a pain in the ass, but he was MY pain in the ass," Shirley has oft quoted in these recent weeks. To his daughters, Tonya and Amanda, he was simply everything.
Allen worked in student housing at both Morehead State University and Lynchburg College, and retired as a counselor in Dayton, OH. His colleagues became life-long friends and he managed to be both a leader and the life of the party. With not one, but two, completely worthless degrees in English Non-Teaching, Allen was passionate about words. A consummate storyteller, he had the soul of a poet and greatly admired the works of William Blake, Thoreau, and Eminem. He was truly brilliant, despite that time he bought steaks from some guy's trunk in the Post Office parking lot. He maintained they were the best steaks he'd ever eaten.
Allen loved music, Scrabble, dreams, the desert, mysticism, synchronicities, Carl Jung, nature, his friends, and discussing politics, stocks, and YouTube conspiracy theories with his son-in-law Ryan Kemble.
His greatest joy came from his grandchildren: Dakota, Lily, Audrey, Elise, Isaiah, and Desirae. He is much loved by the many he leaves behind.
As a religious scholar and devout believer, Allen hoped he would leave this world bidding God hello with thankfulness for all he had seen and known.
Those wishing to celebrate Allen's life should join his family on Sunday, March 25, 2018 from 3-7 PM in the private room at Legends Sports Pub & Grille, 7617 Dayton Springfield Rd., Fairborn OH 45324.
