Alfred J. Elter

November 23, 1928 — April 4, 2014

Elter, Alfred J., age 85, of Dayton, passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 in Miamisburg, Ohio. He was born November 23, 1928 in Dayton, Ohio to the late Herbert and Anna (nee Schmidt) Elter.

On May 17, 1952, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Katherine Frantz in Dayton, Ohio, at Corpus Christi Church, and settled in Kettering, Ohio, where they began their married life. Their life in Ohio included residences in Kettering, Spring Valley and Waverly, prior to settling into Elmcroft of Miamisburg, where Elizabeth is still a resident.

He is survived by his wife: Elizabeth; daughters: Kathleen (Elter) and her husband: George Hanrahan, Susan (Elter) and her husband: Robert Rodebush; sons: Thomas Elter and his wife: Prangthip (Thasanoh), Michael Elter and his wife: Kristin; three grandchildren: Ryan Rodebush, Samuel Elter and Brandon Elter. H is further survived by his sister: Margaret and her husband: Charles Nickel; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Alfred had a long career as a toolmaker, and retired from Pitney Bowes in Miamisburg. He was very handy at anything he tried, from jewelry-making and watch repair, to home remodeling and repair. His proudest achievement was designing and overseeing the building of their retirement home on the 5-acre "farm" he shared with his wife, in Spring Valley, Ohio.

He enjoyed special family events with camera in hand and hysterically laughing while watching "Tom & Jerry" and "Roadrunner" cartoons with young family members. He was best buddies with the family dog, Daisy, who loved to curl up in his lap and be spoiled.

A nature lover at heart, he enjoyed feeding and watching song birds, admiring wildlife and viewing geologic wonders in national parks. He was an avid gardener, loved being outdoors on his tractor on the "Farm", that was planted with fruit trees, vegetables and his beloved irises. He stocked his pond, where he enjoyed watching family members fish during visits.
