Alberto G. Mendez

August 22, 1947 — March 16, 2022

Alberto G. Mendez, age 74, of Dayton, passed away on March 16, 2022, at Miami Valley Hospital. Alberto was born in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico on August 22, 1947. He was the son of Antonio and Soledad (Gonzalez) Mendez. On November 21, 1970, in Mexico City, Alberto married Maria C. Mendez and together they journeyed to the United States to create a beautiful family and life.

As a young boy, Alberto's parents would give him toys and the first thing he would do is take them apart to study the workings only to reassemble and play later. From those young years, Alberto would dream of becoming an engineer. He studied hard, while simultaneously working to pay for school, and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Instituto Polytecnico International (ESIME). He was sent by his employer in Mexico to assist with a project in the United States. Contacts (and lifelong friends) that he met while working here led to his employment at an Ohio firm where he was VP of Engineering from 1973 to 1979. In this role he established EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) standards as well as quality control guidelines for the entire organization.

Alberto had an incredible work ethic coupled with an infectious personality and was a leader among his peers. This drive would lead him to found AMG, Inc., where he served as President. At AMG, Alberto further developed his professional expertise in engineering management, conceptual design, mechanical design and specifications, capital cost estimating, operator training, equipment selection, feasibility studies, process design and optimization and process research and development. As a result of his deep professional knowledge and the joy that others brought to his life, he became a mentor to many leaders of industry around the country.

In his private life, Alberto loved to be with his family and friends. He coached his children in soccer and enjoyed being a part of their lives as they grew. Later, his 10 grandchildren kept Alberto busy and full of life. He would work hard to schedule sleepovers at his house with all 10 grandkids at the same time. He would play games and became just one of the kids.

Alberto loved to eat, especially home cooked meals; he would prefer to stay home and have dinner rather than going out. The walls of his home still echo his words after a great meal, "Que rico es vivir!" translated, "How wonderful it is to be alive!" Alberto was a selfless, caring, loving man. He always tried to share kindness with everyone and would give everyone the benefit of the doubt. He was an eternal optimist. He was a simple man with simple needs: family, home, and work. He will be deeply missed by all.

Alberto leaves behind a beautiful legacy of his loving wife, Maria; son, Alberto "Jr." Mendez of Dayton, daughters, Julieta (husband James) Davis of Centerville and Josefina (husband Erik) Schmella of Westchester, CA; sisters, Maria Ramona Mendez and Alicia Mendez both of Mexico City, Mexico; brother, Sergio Mendez of Mexico City, Mexico; grandchildren, Ava and Bligh Mendez, Jameson, Truman, Amelia, Darwin and Eliana Davis, Jax, Maverik and Reese Schmella; sisters-in-law, Reyna Sanchez, Josefina Gutierrez, and Maria Eugenia Frixione; nephews, Jose Alfonso Sanchez and Fernando Gutierrez, nieces, Mariana Gutierrez, Fernanda Gutierrez and

Flor Elisa Sanchez; aunt, Carmela Partida; and Goddaughters, Veronica Partida, Elizabeth Rocha, and Teresa Bardon.

Along with his parents, Alberto was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Jose Alfonso Sanchez Perez, mother-in-law, Josefina Sanchez Martinez, brother-in-law, Jose Alfonso Sanchez and sister-in-law, Rosalba Sanchez.

A funeral Mass will be conducted on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at 10:00 am at the Church of the Incarnation, 55 Williamsburg Lane, Dayton.
