A.J. Joiner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, departed this world peacefully on the morning of February 10, 2025, surrounded by family in Kettering, Ohio. Born on July 3, 1948, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, A.J. lived a life brimming with love, laughter, and a legacy of cherished memories.
A.J. dedicated his life not just to his work but to the people he adored. High School nurtured his interest in chemistry while working at Dick’s Pharmacy. He began his adult career at the Schlitz brewery then went on to be a successful insurance salesman in the business community, and enjoyed a lucrative career as a Pharmaceutical Representative for Stuart Pharmaceuticals where he laid the foundation for a professional journey that would include owning and operating several businesses. His entrepreneurial spirit flourished with AJ's Two Lane Tap, which transformed into the renowned nightclub and discotheque AJ's Arabian Palace. A.J. also made his mark in the beauty industry with A.W.S. Health and Beauty Aids and AJ's Hair Products Company, starting with a single relaxer and expanding to over 21 innovative haircare products. His most important job of all was raising his family.
A man of many talents, A.J. held a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, showcasing his intelligence and dedication to lifelong learning. He was known for his funny, witty, kind, and patient demeanor, attributes that made him a cherished friend and family member to both his own immediate family and his chosen family by marriage. As an only child, he never looked at Wanda's family as in laws but rather his own blood family and they did so in return. His love for music enriched his life; A.J. played the saxophone and even formed a band, delighting audiences while playfully jumping on his knees, often ruining yet another suit. A.J.'s son's would often humorously compare him to the lyrics of James Brown's "Papa Don't Take No Mess".
A.J.'s proudest accomplishments were anchored in love and family. He married his high school sweetheart, Wanda R. Joiner, and they shared 60 wonderful years together. He often told her, "I Love You Forever and a Day," encapsulating his enduring affection. A.J. had a special way of expressing love to everyone around him—reminding each person that, "I love you, and there is nothing you can do about it."
He leaves behind his dear wife, Wanda, and their sons: Andre' M. (Lisa) Joiner, Eric T. (Dr. Shelly Joiner) Joiner, and Allan J. (LaDonnia) Joiner. A.J. was a proud grandfather to Alex (Jazmin), Andria (Zet), Taylor, Rayven, Alexus, Michael (Alyssa), Micayla (Terique), Aaron Jr., and Miles, and a great-grandfather to Ayra, Tyrone Jr., and Jaye. A.J.’s legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, who always knew him for his loving presence and an unwavering support.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Alvin and Lillie W. Joiner, and his son, Aaron R. Joiner.
