Aivars Kalnins

March 20, 1934 — October 21, 2014

Dr. Aivars Imants Kalnins, age 80 of Kettering, passed away October 21, 2014. He was born March 20, 1934 in Allaži, Latvia to the late Dr. Arnold and Milda Kalnins.

Aivars is survived by his wife Ligita; sister Ruta; children Paul, Laura, Mark, Anda, Daina; and grandchildren Andrea, Alexa, Elize, Lija.

An immigrant from Latvia in 1950, he and his family settled in North Dakota, where his father Arnold established a general medicine practice in Washburn. Aivars attended Bismarck high school, the University of North Dakota, and finally earned his medical doctorate from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1959. After completing his training in Minneapolis, he settled in Dayton, where he practiced general surgery for over 30 years.

As a loving father, active member of the local Latvian community, patron of the arts, and avid gardener, Aivars modeled a life of dedication, kindness, humility, patience, and compassion. He was a steady light to us all and he will be sorely missed.

In lieu of flowers, please consider charitable donations to the Latvian center Garezers (www.garezers.org). Public memorial services will be announced for December.
