Shirley Elizabeth Perryman, age 88 of Dayton, passed away early on the morning of Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at Miami Valley Hospital following complications from a stroke. She was born November 6, 1930 to the late Leon Dancer and Maureen E. (Hodge) Faler.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard M. Perryman and siblings, Jean, Dan, Susan and Nancy.
Shirley will remembered by her son, Clark (Mary) Perryman and daughter, Elizabeth (James Sommers) Perryman; grandchildren, Jonathan (Morgan) Perryman, Clarice Perryman and Amanda (Jonathon) Snyder and great grandchildren, Chloe, Carter and Catalina as well extended family and friends.
Shirley was a 1948 graduate of Shawnee Mission High School and received her Bachelor's in education from Missouri Valley College. She was privileged to have served as a teacher for the Oakwood Community Schools for over 25 years before retiring and was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Shirley was also a member of the Christ United Methodist Church since the early 80's and was proud to have served as their first female usher. Additionally she was a long time member of PEO for over 40 years and had served as a Girl Scout Leader in Leonia, New Jersey
Family and friends of Shirley remember her as a loving, gentle, and generous woman who was dedicated to both her family and her community. Known as a true academic, she had both a passion for learning and for teaching others. She often fondly recalled her love for past students and reflected on their many trips to Glen Helen Nature Preserve. She found passion in teaching science and mathematics and dedicated the last years of her life to staying in touch with students across the community. Loved ones remember Shirley as an incredibly strong, independent, and remarkable woman who inspired kindness and generosity. She always had a helping hand for others.
Family will receive guests from 10:00-11:00 am Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Newcomer Funeral Home in Kettering. Memorial services will immediately follow at 11:00 am also at the funeral home on Tuesday and officiated by Nancy Byrd. Shirley will be laid to rest at Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall, Missouri by her family at a later date. In lieu of flowers and in honor of her memory the family has requested that guests bring school supplies to be donated in support of local schools or offer a monetary contribution to Leonard M. Perryman Communication Scholarship for Racial Ethnic Minority Students at Leonard M. Perryman Scholarship Committee, United Methodist Church Communications, Relationship Team, 810 12th Ave. South, Nashville, TN 37203-4744.
