Hall J. Compton

March 3, 1950 — November 12, 2020

HALL JOSEPH COMPTON (JOE), 70, of Dayton, Ohio, beloved husband, brother, uncle, great-uncle to be, cherished family member, and friend, passed away November 12, 2020. Joe was born on March 3, 1950 in Dayton, Ohio to Hall W. and Joan E. (Reinheimer) Compton. He grew up in Kettering, Ohio and attended Fairmont High School. Joe completed his initial two years of college at Purdue University and received his bachelor of science degree in business and accounting from Wright State University.

He joined the administrative division of what is now called Public Health, Dayton and Montgomery County in 1974. Joe became the controller of finance and supervised a large staff. He served under five health commissioners during his career. He was known as a firm but fair watchdog for the Health District's finances. He was always willing to help other divisions with finance management and proper grant writing. After 36 years of service, Joe retired in 2010.

Joe met his wife Sandra in April, 1988 at local scuba diving club meetings where they grew to know each other. At those meetings, they decided to pursue advanced diver training. Their passion for scuba diving was the theme of their wedding on July 29, 1990. Joe loved fine dining with Sandra, nights at the Schuster Center, scuba diving, all things science fiction, the Ohio State Buckeyes, NASCAR, Dayton Dragons games, Jimmy Buffett, the Gulf of Mexico, the beaches of the Florida panhandle, and seafood, especially shrimp.

Joe had a passion for fast cars, especially Porsches. He was also an excellent, loving, and devoted pet parent to his cats, Lady, Sable, and Willie, who preceded him in death. Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing on the Montgomery County League on Monday nights at Community Golf Course. Afterwards, Joe relished in the after-golf eating and gab sessions.

Joe is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sandra L. Winn, his brother, David B. Compton, and nephews Kyle (Shaylen Foley) Compton, Zachary Compton, and Benjamin (Lauren Gryniewicz) Compton. Joe was preceded in death by his parents. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time, date to be announced.

Joe was gregarious and affable. He was caring and compassionate about the people that entered his life. For those of us that have shared in his life, we all feel a profound sense of emptiness. However, if there are Porsches in heaven, Joe is driving the blue one.
