Larry Douglas Morgan "Doug", Age 76 of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico ultimately won his cancer battle on Thursday, April 9, 2020. He was born in Dayton, OH to the late Robert E. Morgan and Naomi L. (Shultz). He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Douglas "Rob" in 1988.
Doug is survived by his daughter Kelli Renée Swisher, of Beavercreek, OH, and her husband Ben, who was always loved and treated as a son, never an in-law. Doug also adored, spoiled and took great pride in his 3 grandkids, Caleb, Mary and Carson.
He leaves behind his two brothers, Gary (Cris) Morgan of Athens, GA and Steve (Debbie) Shank of Mt Dora, FL. The love and laughter between these three brothers was unmatched.
There are a host of other family members and close friends throughout the country and around the world who are better people because of Doug Morgan. He will be deeply missed by so many.
Doug was a graduate of Beavercreek High School, going on to Bowling Green State University before becoming a highly successful businessman. Doug finally chose to settle into his beloved career as Vice President of Investments and Branch Manager for Raymond James, first in Ft. Lauderdale and then in Key West, where he retired after 25 years. In his "free time", Doug was heavily involved in organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Crimestoppers, and finding his true calling and passion in Rotary Club.
Ten years ago Doug retired to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico where he fell in love with the people, culture and beauty. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling and exploring different parts of Mexico. Cuba became another favorite destination of his. Wherever he went, it was always about the people and wanting to make a difference.
This compassionate heart for others is what led him to establish Seaside Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen in 2012, the first English speaking Rotary Club in Mexico. Through Rotary, Doug poured his time and effort into the lives of the underprivileged with the motto of "Dream Big". His most enduring work was organizing the "Big 6" project that is supplying millions of dollars in medical equipment to hospitals in 6 different Mexican states. For this work and numerous other projects, Doug was presented with the Rotary Club's highest distinguished service honor in 2019.
No one loved life more than Doug. His goal every day was to be courteous, kind, and helpful to friends, family and strangers. Doug's joyful life touched many and his life was an example we should all try to emulate: genuine love and positivity, helping those less fortunate, being grateful for each day, and looking forward to new challenges, adventures and friendships.
Doug's memorial celebration will take place in Mexico at a later date. Until then, in loving memory, contributions may be made to the Seaside Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen via their website at playaseasiderotary.org/get-involved/donate/ specifying the Douglas Morgan Memorial Fund. Or if preferred, donations may be made to the Be Hope Immigration Center in Dayton, Ohio which exists to provide hope to the immigrant community as they face the daunting legal process. Doug has been a part of Be Hope Church since his teenage years, and was very excited about this new ministry. Their giving website is app.securegive.com/behopechurch/immigration-center
Doug will be remembered for using his voice for kindness, his ears for compassion, his hands for charity, his mind for the truth, and his heart for love. Doug's spirit and the positive impact he had on others will live on forever. Love never dies.
"A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed."
