Robert Gordon Stambaugh, of Dayton, Ohio, age 85, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2016.
Bob was born July 5, 1931 to Hubert C. and Ethel (Brown) Stambaugh. During his childhood he lived in Johnson County, Kentucky and attended Flat Gap High School, where he graduated at the age of 16.
As an adult, Bob proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following his military service, he moved to Dayton, Ohio and began employment with the United States Postal Service, from which he retired after 32 years.
In 1960, Bob married Doris Jean (Peck) on New Year's Eve and they were able to spend the next 56 years happily married. Bob loved his wife, treated her with respect and cherished her every day.
They had two children, Sheri Lynn Stambaugh, of Beavercreek and Robert G (Christine) Stambaugh II, also of Beavercreek. His three grandsons, Randall Curtis Freels, Bradley Victor Stambaugh and Jonathon Robert Stambaugh were his pride and joy.
Bob and Doris spent many happy times vacationing at Myrtle Beach, camping, traveling out west to the Grand Canyon and attending Bluegrass festivals. They were regular attendees at the annual Lexington Festival of the Bluegrass and made many friends there.
He and Doris were members of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and was very proud of his title of "Kentucky Colonel". They attended many of the annual Kentucky Colonel picnics, along with his brother Jim-Ed and sisters Peggy and Irma, who were also Colonels.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and several siblings: his brothers, William H Stambaugh, who was lost in WWII, Kenneth B Stambaugh and James Edward Stambaugh, along with sisters Peggy Stambaugh and Patricia Shropshire. He survived by his remaining sister, Irma Irene Cantrell.
He was a true family man and put his wife and children first in life. He was a dedicated and hard worker, continuing to work even after his retirement. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He also loved his Cadillac and Bluegrass music. He was made of a strength and fiber that is hard to come by. Not many can match the standard that he set. A true man in every sense of the word, he can never be replaced, but he will surely be missed.
